One of my jobs growing up was to make my Father’s lunch. Actually, my favorite job, not that it was hard to compete with vacuum cleaning, dusting or washing dishes. My father was not a fussy man, a little boring when it came to lunch food though. I am still amazed at how much he could eat, although he obliviously worked it all off. Let’s see, two sandwiches, at least one fruit, a slice of pie, cookies or muffin, and crackers and cheese for his coffee break. It was all packed into a stainless-steel lunch bucket and two thermoses, one of coffee and one of tea. The tea was always cold in the winter and hot in the summer, he believed it was easier on your system and kept your body temperature more in tune with the season’s temperature. My father retired and I went on to pack school lunches for my son and now I try to pack something tasty and healthy for my lunch.
Lunches have sure changed through the years, so many more options, thank goodness. It’s not just sandwiches, cookies and fruit any more. How about Samosa’s with a side of chutney, pork dumplings with plum sauce, Sushi with wasabi, skewers of salami cheese and olives, seafood wrap… but where oh where are these delicious ideas for my lunch bucket?
