Device leads to park being evacuated
City Park in Kelowna was evacuated Tuesday night as RCMP dealt with a suspicious device.
Police received information about the device located near the washrooms on the beach around 8 p.m. Tuesday.
“As a safety precaution, police evacuated the immediate area and the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit is en route to conduct further investigation,” said Sgt. Mike Cooke.
Police issued an update just before 4:30 this morning.
“The RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit has attended and removed the device. One male had been taken into custody who had the device with him in the park. The male has since been released pending further investigation. The police are still examining the item however at this particular junction it is believed to be a smoke grenade,” stated Cooke.
