Assault suspect arrested in Kelowna
A Surrey man remains in police custody facing numerous potential charges in Kelowna after a concerned citizen called the RCMP to report a woman crying for help early Monday morning.
On Mar. 23, just after 1:30 a.m., RCMP officers immediately flooded the area after receiving a call from a concerned citizen who reported there was a woman screaming for help in the 1700-block of Morrison Road in Kelowna.
Investigators spoke with witnesses and learned that the woman had departed as a passenger in a vehicle.
“Kelowna and Lake Country officers spotted attempted to stop a vehicle several times, however it fled in a dangerous manner,” said Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy, Kelowna RCMP spokesperson. “Due to their ongoing risk assessment, police did not initiate a pursuit.
“(However) Kelowna RCMP officers once again located the vehicle, successfully deployed a spike belt and a short time later the driver fled on foot from the immobilized vehicle.”
Noseworthy said the passenger was located and confirmed that she had been the woman screaming for help.
“She has cooperated fully with the police investigation.”
Nosweworthy said officers patrolling the area located the driver of the vehicle who was taken into custody without further incident.
A 26-year-old Surrey man has been remanded into custody.
He has been formally charged by the BC Prosecution Service with assault causing bodily harm, failure to stop, prohibited driving and dangerous driving.
