Be prepared for high levels on creek
High water levels on Mission Creek in Kelowna are anticipated for the weekend as Environment Canada is forecasting thunderstorms and significant rainfall. Property owners who have experienced flooding from Mission Creek in the past are advised to be prepared.
The city will be placing sand, sandbags and pre-filled sandbags at the Cook Road Boat Launch (500 Cook Rd.) for property owners who wish to protect their property. Sandbags that were previously dropped at Rowcliffe Park, Sutherland Ave and Burne Ave will remain at those locations but not replenished at this time.
The Kelowna Fire Department also has sandbags (not pre-filled) available at Station 1, 2255 Enterprise Way. Residents are encouraged to call the Fire Hall at 250-469-8801 during normal business hours (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) to ensure someone will be available to help. Staff are there to help and make sure that physical distancing is maintained.
Property owners can monitor flood warnings and advisories on the BC River Forecast Centre website.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, residents are reminded to maintain adequate physical distancing from others if they are picking up sandbags.
Visit the Province’s webpage for information about physical distancing and sandbagging. Residents can also visit Central Okanagan Emergency Operations and Prepared BC websites for information about flood preparedness.
