UPDATE: Extensive damage after house fire in West Kelowna
A home in West Kelowna sustained major damage in a fire Thursday morning.
West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded to the 2000 block of Sunview Drive around 10:30 a.m.
On arrival crews noticed heavy smoke and flames coming from the back side of the house with possible extension to the neighbouring house.
“The first due engine company made a great tactical decision pulling large diameter hose lines to knock down the large volume of fire in an attempt to stop house to house ignition. A small grass fire was also ignited by radiant heat in the back portion of the property which was knocked down by the same exposure hand lines. Once the fire was cooled from the exterior crews transitioned to an interior attack to knock down any residual fire in the void spaces. Fortunately the neighbouring home only received minor smoke damage in the attic space and did not catch on fire,” said Chad Gartrell, assistant fire chief.
The home owners were not at home at the time, but they are insured.
Damage was extensive, with fire investigators deeming the fire accidental, undetermined and not suspicious.
“This is a good reminder for home owners that live along the wildland interface to ensure they fire smart priority zone one around their properties to prevent house to forest ignition,” said Gartrell.
