The B.C. Wildfire Service has made progress on a pair of new fires in the Kamloops Fire Centre Sunday.
A wildfire, thought to be caused by human activity, is burning along Green Mountain Road east of Princeton. It’s about 1.5 hectares and was initially classified as burning out of control but that has now been updated to being held.
The Riley Creek fire near Lillooet is under a hectare in size. It’s burning along the eastern edge of the Fraser River and is classified as under control. It’s not clear how that fire began.
Across B.C. five wildfires have begun over the weekend and overall, there are 30 active wildfires with 8 in the Kamloops Fire Centre. The majority of the fires are located in the southeastern region.
The largest is the Doctor Creek fire at an estimated 7,600 hectares. It’s located just west of Canal Flats.
The B.C. Wildfire Service has dedicated 165 firefighters, 8 helicopters and 13 pieces of heavy equipment to the blaze. Five properties are under an evacuation order as of Sunday morning.
The Wildfire Service says it is preparing to deal with strong winds that are expected in the region.
