Nominations underway for Civic and Community Awards
The nomination period is officially open for the 46th annual Civic and Community Awards in Kelowna. The annual awards recognize outstanding citizens including volunteers, artists and athletes, along with businesses and organizations whose contributions and achievements helped to shine a positive light on Kelowna in 2020.
“We appreciate that this year has been extraordinary, and these awards provide us with an opportunity to recognize those in our community who have stepped up to show incredible resiliency and positivity in what has been a challenging year for so many in our community,” said Mariko Siggers, Community and Neighbourhood Services Manager.
Civic Award nomination categories include:
Sarah Donalda Treadgold & Fred Macklin Memorial Award – Citizen of the Year
Champion for the Environment
Corporate Community of the Year
Honour in the Arts
Teen Honour in the Arts
Young Male & Female Volunteer of the Year
Bob Giordano Memorial Award – Volunteer Coach or Sport Administrator of the Year
Bryan Couling Memorial Award – Athletic Team of the Year
Male & Female Athlete of the Year
Central Okanagan Foundation – Volunteer Organization of the Year
The Young Male & Female Volunteer of the Year finalists will receive funding towards their post-secondary education through the Payton and Dillon Budd Memorial Fund Youth Scholarship.
Nominations will be accepted in the Male and Female Athlete of the Year and Athletic Team of the Year categories for 2020, but will be carried over and combined with nominations for 2021.
“We understand that this year, there may not be as many nominations in the sporting categories due to the lack of team-based competitions,” said Siggers. “With that in mind, and also anticipating that pandemic measures impacting competitive sport will continue into 2021, we’ve decided to combine any nominations this year with those that come in next year as part of the 47th annual award program.”
The 2020 award announcements, typically held in April as an evening gala, will be adapted in light of the ongoing pandemic and associated restrictions around gatherings. While the exact format is still being determined, it will likely be held in a virtual format.
Nominations forms are due by Feb. 12, 2021. For more information about the awards including nomination forms, visit kelowna.ca/civicawards.
