Celebrate public works staff and help keep them safe
The City of West Kelowna is paying tribute to the people that work in public works.
“Public works staff are the core of our community, making it the place we love to live, work and play and ensuring we have the services we rely on around the clock and so often take for granted – arenas and other city facilities, parks, roads and sidewalks, sanitary and storm sewers, waste collection, water and much more,” a news release from the city stated.
May 16 to 22 is National Public Works Week, and the 2021 theme is Stronger Together. West Kelowna is inviting the public to recognize the many municipal staff and city contractors in public works who help keep communities strong and resilient.
“Show your appreciation to these staff as you see them around town,” the release suggested.
The city also reminds people to be careful in Cone Zones for the safety of crews everywhere. Orange cones are often the only thing separating them from a vehicle. Here’s what drivers should do in roadside work zones:
- Slow down and drive with care.
- Pay attention, minimize distractions and leave your phone alone.
- Obey road signs, traffic cones and directions given by traffic control people; it is the law.
