Public urged to avoid part of Kelowna due to police incident
Kelowna RCMP has responded to a building near the intersection of Harvey Avenue and Gordon Drive this morning.
Just before 6 a.m. on June 3, RCMP were called to assist the Kelowna Fire Department who had responded to a complaint of a fire at a building in the 1000-block of Harvey Avenue. Firefighters reported locating a distraught man inside with injuries who had subsequently barricaded himself in a unit of the building.
The area has been cordoned off to allow for first responders to safety deal with the situation.
Residents of the building have been evacuated and the City of Kelowna has provided buses to offer temporary shelter.
Police are requesting that the public stay away from the area and use alternate routes for vehicular and pedestrian travel. The length of time these closures will remain in effect is unknown.
“This is an unfolding situation and details are minimal. More information will be made known as it learned as is appropriate,” Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy said.
