Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Okanagan highway
Environment Canada is warning of a severe thunderstorm impacting travel on the highway between Kelowna and Merritt.
The weather agency said a series of severe thunderstorms are moving into the area and could be capable of producing lightning, nickel-sized hail and heavy rain on the Okanagan Connector between Elkhart Lake Recreation Site and Rampart Lake Recreation Site.
The storm could cause flash floods, water pooling on roads, and reduce visibility. People travelling on the highway are being warned weather in the mountains can change suddenly and that they should turn on their lights and maintain safe following distances.
Travellers are also advised to check road conditions at DriveBC prior to getting behind the wheel.
Additionally, a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the entire Okanagan area.
Environment Canada warns the storm could bring lightning, heavy rain, hail and gusting winds.
People are advised to go indoors “when the thunder roars.”
