Police watchdog not pursuing charges in porta-potty shooting
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. has closed an investigation into a police-involved shooting in West Kelowna and are not recommending charges.
The IIO stated that police responded to calls of a firearm in the 700 block of Harvey Avenue, as well as near Olalla and Kyline Roads, at approximately 12:10 p.m. on Oct. 18. 2023.
The agency said officers located the suspect inside a porta-potty, and, while trying to extricate the man, an officer discharged their firearm and injured the suspect.
The man was taken to hospital for treatment of the gunshot injury.
Upon reviewing the evidence, the IIO determined there were “no reasonable grounds to believe any officer may have committed an offence,” and will not be recommending charges.
The provincial police watchdog closed the case Friday, June 14.
The IIO noted the court process for the original report was ongoing.
