Highlights of September 14 Council meeting

Water Street project

Council denied an application asking for a site-specific text amendment to allow short-term rentals on one of three towers proposed for the corner of Leon Avenue and Water Street. Council adopted short-term rental regulations in summer 2019 and recommend the rules be applied consistently within the community with no site-specific exemptions. Staff are anticipating a full review of the regulations in 2021/22.

Lakeshore development

Council considered a rezoning request for a development at 3290 and 3340 Lakeshore Rd that includes two towers and some 320 units. The proposal, which would be on the site of the current Willow Creek Campground and an adjacent parking lot, was given first reading and forwarded to the October 6 public hearing.

Building statistics

Staff updated Council on Building and Development Statistics between April and June 2020 (‘Q2’). Uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 has seen fewer new development applications made to the City in Q2, although the 2020 total to date of 374 is almost on track with 2019’s 382. City Park upgrades

Council OK’d staff to apply for $2.9 million in federal government grant funding for improvements to City Park that include a playground, a gathering circle, pier and associated shoreline improvements..
