Kelowna to bid for event

Kelowna city council has decided to go ahead and put in an application to host the 2026 B.C. Summer Games.

Discussions have already been held with the school district and the hospitality industry and both are very much in favour of applying.

The minimum $110,000 required to host the games, could be drawn from the Major Event Program funds.

Other highlights from Kelowna council’s Feb. 8 meeting:
Wilden development

Council considered a rezoning request and Official Community Plan Amendment for the next development phase of the Wilden neighbourhood. The 33-hectare site is north of the intersection of Union Road and Begbie Road, and north of the existing Hidden Hills Drive. The proposal is for 107 single-family lots, two multi-family sites, a neighbourhood park and open space. Council gave first reading and forwarded the proposal to the Feb. 23 public hearing.

Central Green

Council OK’d a development permit allowing for two 6 ½-storey residential buildings at 1710-1740 Richter Street, the final two buildings in the Central Green project. The City will also proceed with the Bertram Pedestrian Overpass over Highway 97 linking the Central Green development to downtown via Bertram Street.

H2O Adventure & Fitness Centre

A two-year extension was granted to the agreement between the City and the YMCA of Okanagan to operate the H2O Adventure & Fitness Centre, to allow for City staff to review the City’s management approach to the facility and report back to Council on future options.
