Campfire ban lifted for majority of Central Okanagan

The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) has lifted a majority of it’s campfire bans as recent showers and cooler, seasonal temperatures have lowered the fire threat risk to moderate.

The bans are being lifted in the RDCO fire protection areas, which includes Elilson, Joe Rich, North Westside and Wilson’s Landing. The bans have also been rescinded in the City of West Kelowna and Westbank First Nation reserves #9 and #10, District of Lake Country and District of Peachland.

Those who choose to have a campfire must ensure the fire is attended to at all times, that tools are on hand to contain the flames, and that the fire is completely extinguished and cool to the touch before leaving.

The campfire ban remains in place for the City of Kelowna.

The RDCO also reminds people to be careful when extinguishing smoking materials, and to not throw cigarettes or other materials from vehicles. Smoking is also not allowed in any RDCO regional or municipal park. Smoking is also prohibited, in any children’s play areas, sports fields, undeveloped parks and wilderness trails in the District of Peachland.

Fireworks are not allowed at any time in most areas of the Central Okanagan, and written approval from the fire chief is needed to set off fireworks in the District of Lake Country and the City of West Kelowna.
