Man sentenced for smuggling gun magazines at Okanagan border crossing
An Alberta man has been convicted on a charge of trying to bring illegal gun magazines across the border in the South Okanagan.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said Jody Stuart Bishop, a resident of Carbon, Alberta, was stopped while crossing the Canada-U.S. border at the Osoyoos port of entry in December of 2022.
A secondary examination of Bishop’s belongings were ordered and, during the inspection, three prohibited over-capacity magazines were discovered.
Bishop was arrested and an investigation was launched by the BCSA’s Pacific Region Criminal Investigations Section.
On Oct. 5, 2023, Bishop plead guilty in Penticton Provincial Court to one count of smuggling.
He was fined $7,500 and issued a two year firearms prohibition.
A gun magazine is an ammunition storage and feeding device for a repeating firearm.
