Over $15.6-million invested in Kelowna transit system
Investments from upper levels of government are supporting the public transit system in Kelowna.
The federal and provincial governments, as well as B.C. Transit, have committed to providing over $15.7-million to build three enhanced transit exchanges in Kelowna.
The investments will support the development of bus shelters, Park & Ride and operator facilities, micro-mobility supportive infrastructure, and improved sidewalks and roads.
The provincial and federal governments are both investing $6,293,812 in this project, while B.C. Transit will provide $3,146,907.
“Efficient public transit creates healthier communities, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and helps fight climate change,” Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, said.
“Today’s investment in B.C. will help us achieve these goals, while providing British Columbians with safe and reliable transportation services. By investing in our public transit infrastructure, the federal government is playing an essential role in ensuring Canadians’ quality of life.”
Kelowna is one of four communities benefiting from a total of $91.3-million in transit upgrades through this partnership.
Another $47.8-million will go towards the early work for the development of a Saanich Transit Centre; nearly $13.1-million will go to creating high capacity charging infrastructure for electric buses in Langford; just over $8.4-million will go toward repairs of the Victoria Transit Centre and enhancements to the Langford Transit Centre; while $6.2-million will go towards the creation of a maintenance training centre at the Victoria Transit Centre’s tire bay.
“Kelowna and the Capital region are all rapidly growing communities. People in these communities deserve safe and reliable transit that is accessible for everyone,” Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, said.
“New bus exchanges, charging stations and training facilities will ensure the transit network is equipped to provide quality service for years to come.”
