Drivers caught using electronic devices
RCMP officers in Kelowna handed out several dozen tickets for distracted driving during special enforcement as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
Officers were stationed in the 2100-block of Enterprise Way and in the school zone on Richter at Raymer Road on March 15.
The campaign resulted in 58 violation tickets being issued: 44 were for use of an electronic device while driving, 12 of those specifically in a school zone; 12 tickets were issued for speeding in a school zone and two were issued for not wearing a seat belt.
“It’s almost a bittersweet because I’m proud my team is catching these drivers and making our roads safer, yet this number of offenders especially in a school zone is simply unacceptable to everyone” Sgt. Colby Attlesey of Kelowna Municipal Traffic Services, said. “Our message remains the same, please stay off your phones and be mindful of your speed at all times.”
The penalty for distracted driving is a fine of $368 and four driver penalty points.
