Severe thunderstorms possible for the Okanagan
Lightning flashes may be seen in the Okanagan as a storm moves into the area.
Environment Canada issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch Thursday, July 25, stating conditions are favourable for a storm to develop that could see heavy rain coupled with bolts of lightning.
The weather agency noted the areas impacted by past burns could be more susceptible to debris flows during heavy downpours, adding lots of rain could also cause flash floods and water pooling on the roads.
Lightning strikes can cause serious harm or death, and Environment Canada advised that “when thunder roars, go indoors.”
The forecasts for Vernon and Kelowna called for a chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms through Thursday until 7 p.m.
The clouds were expected to clear in the evening and through the night, returning to mainly sunny weather by Friday morning.
