Thanks for checking out our first ever 80’s 90’s music video review. That’s right…we’re going to turn back the clock and see how well these classic tunes held up in video form. This week’s video review is Dead or Alive’s iconic ‘You Spin Me Round (like a record).
THE BACKGROUND: The group was formed in Liverpool in 1980…had several top 40 UK singles but was best known for this song that hit #11 on the Billboard chart in 1985. Surprisingly it charted again in 2003 and 2006 following lead singer Pete Burns appearance on Celebrity Big Brother.
THE REVIEW: Maybe one of the catchier tunes from the era…but Pete Burns dance moves are questionable at best. The band members being forced to pose in a family portrait style is laugh out loud awesome.
The 80’s hairstyles are on point but Burn’s rocking the crimped hair and pirate patch is an interesting choice. The disco ball spinning is maybe the only thing that makes sense in this video…but hey it’s classic 80’s and we LOVE the camp of it all! Flag waving, people tied up in gold ribbon creates a video Boy George would have loved! It’s cheesy but fun.
We’re giving this one 7 spins out of 10 on the 80’s merry-go-round!
FUN FACT: The band (originally named Nightmares in Wax) had 17 members since 1979 with only Pete Burns being the original member from 1980 to 2016 when he passed away of cardiac arrest.
