Weekend temperature records shattered by cold temperatures

If you thought it was colder than usual over the weekend you were right.

Environment Canada says temperature records for the lowest daytime high were broken across the Okanagan Valley.

In Vernon, temperatures on Sunday only reached the single digits.

” We only got on 8.8 degrees on Sunday, and the normal is 18 degrees Celsius”, said Matt MacDonald of Environment Canada.

Sunday’s temperatures in Vernon broke the previous lowest daytime high record of 9.4 degrees set back in 1959.

In Kelowna, temperatures hovered around 10 degrees, breaking the lowest daytime high record of 10.6 degrees set back in 1925.

Environment Canada says the unusually cool temperatures are from a cold front that has been sweeping through the valley since Thursday.

“We’ve just had this continuous northerly circulation so our air is coming all the way down from the Yukon and Northwest Territories,” Macdonald said.

The chilliness is expected to continue overnight with temperatures expected to reach zero degrees. Much of the Okanagan Valley is in for patchy frost, according to Environment Canada.
