Well, that was short-lived; no Super Bowl ads on TV again
I’m not going to pretend I understand court procedure because I watch crime shows on TV, but essentially, when Canadians complained loud enough that we wanted to see the Super Bowl ads during the game, the CRTC said “Ok, starting in 2017, we’ll stop airing the Canadian commercials and let you see the high price US ones.” But Bell (who owns the broadcast rights to the game right now) appealed to the Supreme Court.
Here is a well-written summary of the case from the Supreme Court’s website, but to summarize why we won’t be seeing the American ads this year;
The CRTC was arguing cable and satellite companies carrying US stations had to broadcast the US version of the Super Bowl, including the commercials.
This was beyond the powers the CRTC had under a section of the Broadcasting Act. Going beyond its powers made the 2017 decision not “correct.” The Supreme Court didn’t decide whether the CRTC could make the decision under a different section of the Act, though.
Anyways, you can always see the ads on Youtube, often ahead of the game.
