Today marks the anniversary the world met Dolly the Sheep, back on Feb. 22, 1997. What was so special about Dolly? She was mankind’s first cloned mammal!
I wondered, “Whatever happened to that famous sheep?” I discovered that even though Dolly passed away in 2003, she bore 6 lambs across 3 pregnancies, and also has 4 siblings that were cloned from the same DNA sequence. The success rate of cloning is exceptionally low; only 1-2 embryos out of 100 survive pregnancy and develop into a live animal. Looks like reproduction, the old-fashioned away, is much more efficient!
